Prioritizing Disaster Preparedness and Safety at the Farm

At Hooved Animal Humane Society (HAHS), the safety of our animals, staff, and volunteers is always top of mind. That’s why we recently took proactive steps to improve our fire preparedness by inviting our local fire department for a comprehensive property walkthrough. Their team provided valuable insight into potential access challenges and emergency response needs specific to large, rural properties like ours.

Following their recommendations, we’ve begun implementing several key improvements, including:

  • -Clearly labeling our address and access points for quicker identification during emergencies

  • -Inspecting and replacing fire extinguishers across the property

  • -Evaluating driveways, gates, and barn entrances to ensure emergency vehicles can reach every area efficiently

Is Your Property Fire-Ready?
We strongly encourage anyone with a farm, ranch, or large property to consider scheduling a similar walkthrough with their local fire department. These evaluations help first responders determine the hose lengths and equipment required to serve your specific location. Preparing in advance can significantly reduce response times and increase safety for both humans and animals during a crisis.

A.F.T.E.R. Training with CODE 3 Associates
In addition to local partnerships, we also value the specialized training offered through CODE 3 Associates. Their A.F.T.E.R. (Assessment For Fire and Emergency Response) program is specifically designed for animal shelters, sanctuaries, and large-animal facilities. The training focuses on assessing fire risks, developing emergency response plans, and improving coordination with local fire departments.

Taking action today can make all the difference tomorrow. We’re proud to be working with both local and national partners to create a safer environment for the animals who rely on us.
