CLOSED Horse Care and Trainer

Position Type: Full-Time (with Benefits)
Location: Hooved Animal Humane Society 10804 McConnell Rd. Woodstock, IL 60098
Reports To: Executive Director
Schedule: 40 hours/week, including weekends

Position Overview
The Horse Care and Trainer is a vital member of our equine team, responsible for the daily care, handling, and training of horses, as well as instructing riding lessons. This position requires hands-on experience with horses of varying levels of training and behavior, a proactive work ethic, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Care
  • Perform daily feeding, watering, stall cleaning, grooming, and turnout routines
  • Monitor horse health and behavior; identify and respond to injuries, illness, or lameness
  • Administer basic medical care and communicate with veterinarians and farriers as needed
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized barn and equipment areas
Training and Riding
  • Train horses with a focus on ground manners, saddle training, and riding under saddle
  • Work with horses that may have behavioral issues or limited prior training
  • Develop individualized training plans and track progress
  • Ride and exercise horses regularly to improve fitness, responsiveness, and adoptability
Teaching and Community Engagement
  • Instruct riding lessons for students of varying ages and skill levels
  • Ensure safety and appropriate horse-rider pairings for lessons
  • Assist with educational programming, clinics, and special events as needed
Logistics and Team Support
  • Load and unload horses from trailers safely and confidently
  • Assist with transporting horses to veterinary appointments, events, or adoptive homes
  • Participate in planning and recordkeeping related to horse training and care
  • Communicate effectively with team members, volunteers, and the public

Requirements
  • Minimum of 7 years of hands-on horse handling, training, and riding experience
  • Comfortable working with green or reactive horses
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Weekend availability required
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to drive a horse trailer strongly preferred
  • Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • Team player with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Prior experience teaching riding lessons preferred
