Why It Matters

Every year, thousands of American horses are shipped across our borders to be slaughtered for human consumption. The Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act is critical legislation that would permanently ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the export of horses for slaughter abroad.

At the Hooved Animal Humane Society, we believe every horse deserves a humane, dignified life and end of life. Horse slaughter is not only inhumane but also unnecessary—there are humane alternatives such as rescue, rehabilitation, responsible rehoming or humane euthanasia by veterinarian. Furthermore, many horses sent to slaughter have received medications that can render their meat hazardous for human consumption.

By supporting the SAFE Act, we can protect America’s horses from cruelty and ensure they are treated with the respect they deserve. Contact your legislators today and urge them to support this vital bill!
